How To Become A Brief Communicator + Arguing About Agility

One of the things I say to clients is communicate your best. So when you go into a room, ... one of the tricks I suggest is think of a favorite person in your life, whether it's a grandparent or a mentor, or perhaps you had a horrible life and you didn't have any grandparent or mentor, but there's one person who believed in you. Imagine that they walk in the room, make that person proud of you.   Mimi Goss

Hi,

These past few weeks I have had great opportunities to communicate my message about why we need to focus on improving on our "soft" skills so we can have better results in our work on the tech side. I have had to think through about why should you, as reader or listener, truly care. What's in it for you, right?

I had to put into practice a lot of the lessons I have learned as a communicator and recently, what I learned in my class The Art of Communication with Dr. Mimi Goss. Her main message was: what is your one sentence? Distilling a bunch of knowledge into a succinct sentence is no easy task so she breaks it down in the latest episode.

I also had the opportunity to bring this message in the Arguing Agile podcast. This was such a fun opportunity to talk with other agile enthusiasts about what is missing from the training and implementation of agile practices among teams: how to deal with people!
Watch the episode here or listen here. Note: Check out my 'I have hardcore soft skills" shirt and let me know if you'd like one : )

Lastly I traveled Baltimore to speak at the AFCEA TechNet Cyber Conference. Seeing faces from friends and colleagues in worldwide defense organizations was fun. Plus, the conversations about psychological safety, how to implement change that sticks and dealing with human behavior were very enriching.

Right now I will be taking a brief pause from releasing new episodes while I finish my last class in my masters program at Harvard (!!!). Each week, I will still be in contact with you with this newsletter to bring you lessons I want to share.

See you next week!
